Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Release Candidate 0 (RC 0) introduces two significant documentation changes; a new help viewer that changes the way that you install and view the documentation, and the documentation has been restructured to address issues with previous versions of Books Online.
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Release Candidate 0 (RC 0) now uses the help viewer released with Microsoft® Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Also, the SQL Server documentation is no longer included in the installation media, but must be either viewed online, or downloaded as a local help collection. Books Online for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 contains a smaller set of foundation content optimized for users who are searching for information about how to complete a task. This version of Books Online contains these main types of information:
Task topics that describe how to perform common tasks, such as how to create a cube or alter a table.
Feature topics that provide a brief description of the feature and a table of the common tasks required to use the feature.
Reference topics that describe the syntax of items such as command prompt utilities and languages, such as Transact-SQL and MDX.
Developer Reference for Microsoft SQL Server 2012, a set of content that contains the conceptual and reference documentation for programmers building applications that use the SQL Server application programming interfaces (APIs).
Installation for Microsoft SQL Server 2012, content describing how to plan and run a SQL Server installation.
Tutorials for Microsoft SQL Server 2012, a set of quick, guided walkthroughs of common SQL Server tasks. To view the initial set of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Release Candidate 0 (RC 0) tutorials, see the Tutorials page.
Current plans are to provide a set of guides in the future. The guides will give prescriptive guidance and conceptual descriptions of SQL Server features and operations. The guides will be optimized for users seeking a more in-depth understanding of a feature, or to learn about areas of the product they have not used before.
The restructuring project is not complete; many feature and task topics have not yet been converted to their final forms. Later versions of the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 documentation will include further changes to the Books Online content, along with additional items such as the guides.
